We are designing one of the five blocks in Brick by Brick’s Fairfield Homes development which in total will provide over 400 new homes in the heart of Central Croydon. The scheme also includes new public space, shops, community and office space. The site sits adjacent to the iconic Fairfield Halls which is set to open in September 2019 after a major refurbishment by Brick by Brick. Common Ground Architecture is working in collaboration with MICA Architects who are leading on the design of the wider development.
Our building faces onto College Green and seeks to complete the fourth edge of the square to create a new civic terminus to the space. The building aims to be a counterpoint to the Grade II Listed Segas House opposite, referencing its symmetry, singular materiality and civic presence.
The proposed woven facade is composed of two repeating elements to create an alternating pattern whilst ensuring the balconies and apartments stack efficiently for ease of construction. The use of a singular material palette across the whole building aims to give the impression that the building has been carved from a single form. Retail and community space is provided in the double height ground floor with prime frontage onto College Green, aiming to invigorate the currently underused public space.
The project is set to start construction in early 2020.
