Workspace Conversion, Central Croydon
The conversion of this old townhouse to a workspace, in the Central Croydon Conservation Area, was completed in 2019 for Brick By Brick and Common Ground Architecture. The new workspace, situated above the ground floor retail space, re-purposed the previously over divided small offices into a contemporary, light-filled co-working space, bringing energy to the local high street.
The space uses ‘homely’ features to create an office space with ‘wellness’ in mind. Blandly open spaces are avoided; instead, characterful places to work are created, enhancing the Brick By Brick ethos of flexible working. Fixed desks and corporate meeting rooms are avoided in favour of flexible work stations and private breakout spaces.
The first floor is separated into two spaces by large sliding doors, which can be opened to create one big gathering place and a function room. The stair is the primary design feature, connecting the multiple spaces. The decoration of the stair extends the vertical motif of the shop front at ground floor, but varies in character depending on the position within the building. The roof space was opened to reveal the rafters and create a light and intimate space on the top floor.
The budget was tight, so off-the-shelf products were used where possible, and the standard interior specification for Brick By Brick homes was implemented, providing an opportunity to test the products we had specified for people’s homes. Open Desk provided the beautifully designed and made office furniture, which adds to the ‘homely’ feel of the workspace. The project highlights the importance of nature in space, by allowing space for window boxes and internal corners or areas for plants
The ground floor retail space became the sales suite for Brick By Brick homes. It was designed to showcase all of the specification fixtures and fitting from a Brick By Brick home, with inspirational furniture, as well as function as a social and welcoming reception.
